Lal Salaam, directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth, is set to receive an extended director’s cut for its OTT release, which promises to deliver a vastly different experience from its theatrical version. After a lackluster performance at the box office, where it grossed only Rs 17 crore against a budget of Rs 90 crore, the film is poised for a revival with the addition of previously missing footage and a new musical score by legendary composer A.R. Rahman.

The Tamil sports drama, which premiered in theaters on February 9th, stars Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in lead roles, with Rajinikanth making a notable extended cameo as Moideen Bhai. Despite the hype surrounding its release, including a teaser revealed on Diwali 2023 and a much-anticipated audio launch in January 2024, Lal Salaam was unable to meet expectations at the box office. However, the film’s social message, focusing on communal harmony through the backdrop of a cricket tournament, was appreciated by critics.

The film’s failure has been partially attributed to a technical issue that caused the loss of crucial scenes. In a recent interview, Aishwarya Rajinikanth revealed that a hard disk containing vital footage had been misplaced, resulting in an incomplete theatrical cut. This missing footage has now been recovered and will be included in the OTT release, giving viewers access to the director’s cut.

Adding to the anticipation, A.R. Rahman has re-scored the entire extended version, further enhancing the film’s emotional depth and visual appeal. Rahman, known for his iconic music, has worked on the film’s new score without any additional charge, as a mark of support for Aishwarya’s vision. This collaboration between Rahman and Aishwarya marks their first project together, adding an extra layer of excitement for fans of the composer.

Plot and Cast Highlights

Lal Salaam features a star-studded ensemble cast. Vishnu Vishal portrays Thirunavukarasu, the son of Manickam (Livingston), while Vikranth plays Shamsuddin, the son of Moideen Bhai (Rajinikanth). Rajinikanth’s portrayal of Moideen Bhai, a pivotal character and the father of Shamsuddin, was one of the highlights of the theatrical release. Other notable cast members include Jeevitha as Rani, Thirunavukarasu’s mother, and Senthil as Samikkannu, along with veteran actors K.S. Ravikumar and Thambi Ramaiah in key roles.

The film also boasts a special cameo by legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, who makes a memorable appearance as himself.

Production Journey

The journey of Lal Salaam began in late 2022 when rumors surfaced that Aishwarya Rajinikanth would be directing a film with Atharvaa in the lead and Rajinikanth in an extended cameo. By November of that year, Aishwarya confirmed her next directorial venture, Lal Salaam, which would focus on Vishnu Vishal as a cricketer and Vikranth in key roles. The production officially kicked off in March 2023, with filming taking place across various locations, including Mumbai, Chennai, Puducherry, and Tiruvannamalai.

The film’s first single, “Ther Thiruvizha,” was released in December 2023, followed by the audio launch at Sri Sairam Institute of Technology in January 2024. The trailer, unveiled on February 5th, created buzz among Rajinikanth’s fans, particularly due to his cameo appearance.

OTT Anticipation

Despite its box office performance, Lal Salaam has the potential for a second wind with its upcoming OTT release. Aishwarya Rajinikanth has confirmed that the extended cut, featuring lost footage and Rahman’s reimagined score, will offer a significantly enhanced version of the film. Fans are eagerly awaiting its digital debut, and Netflix is reportedly the platform that has acquired the streaming rights.

As several films that struggled in theaters have found new life on streaming platforms, it remains to be seen whether Lal Salaam will experience a similar resurgence. With Aishwarya’s reworked vision and Rahman’s fresh score, the OTT release is shaping up to be a much-anticipated event, providing fans with a revamped cinematic experience.
