With less than a week to go, the tension and excitement around Kuberaa—the upcoming socio-political thriller by National Award-winning director Sekhar Kammula—are at a boiling point. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh, the film is slated for a grand theatrical release on June 20 in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.
The film marks Dhanush’s Telugu debut and Sekhar Kammula’s second venture in Tamil after Anaamika. Adding to the anticipation is the combination of a gripping political narrative, OTT release pressures, and a poignant emotional core that links back to Dhanush’s personal roots.
Dhanush as a Revolutionary Beggar
The trailer, released at a grand event in Hyderabad on June 15, attended by filmmaker SS Rajamouli, opens with Dhanush portraying a ragged beggar asking, “What is the worth of crores?” The film teases a David vs Goliath struggle, where the most powerless man in society becomes a disruptive force against systemic injustice. Dhanush’s performance, captured amidst dumpyards and alleys, has already struck a chord.
“To revisit that world was nostalgic and humbling,” said Dhanush, recalling his own modest beginnings. “Shooting in those locations reminded me where I came from.”
Nagarjuna’s Charismatic Shade of Grey
Veteran actor Nagarjuna plays a powerful, enigmatic figure who declares in the trailer, “In this country, only money and power work. Not ethics, not justice.” While he initially supports Dhanush’s character, his intentions seem layered and morally ambiguous, promising a compelling duel between ideals and influence.
Rashmika and Jim Sarbh Add Emotional and Intellectual Weight
Rashmika Mandanna appears as a character grounded in reality—cynical, yet emotionally tethered to Dhanush’s idealism. Meanwhile, Jim Sarbh represents the institutional machinery, likely acting as a gatekeeper of the establishment. The supporting cast includes Dalip Tahil, Sayaji Shinde, Divya Dekate, and Hareesh Peradi.
The Making and the Message
Shot across real locations like dumpyards and slums, Kuberaa is not just a political thriller but also a character study on how the underdog shakes the system. Dhanush emphasized how director Sekhar Kammula’s vision simplified a complex role:
“There was no method acting, no prep—I just followed Sekhar sir’s vision.”
The film’s music is scored by Devi Sri Prasad, with Niketh Bommireddy handling cinematography and Karthik Srinivas on the editing table. The production design is led by Ramakrishna Sabbani and Monika Nigotre.
CBFC Certification & Runtime Trimmed
The film has now been granted a U/A certificate by the CBFC, after trimming its initial 195-minute runtime to 181 minutes (3 hours and 1 minute). The makers had originally secured an early clearance for a longer cut, only to revise it to make the final experience tighter and more accessible for mainstream audiences.
Behind-the-Scenes Drama: OTT and Deadlines
In an industry-first revelation, producer Suniel Narang of Amigos Creations has disclosed how Amazon Prime Video, which owns the film’s post-theatrical rights, allegedly threatened to slash ₹10 crore from the deal if the film missed its June 20 release window.
“I requested a delay till July citing post-production challenges,” Narang told Gulte. “They flatly refused and said they’d cut the amount. This is how much power OTT platforms wield today.”
He also lamented the film industry’s growing dependence on Qube Cinema for projection, BookMyShow for ticketing, and OTTs for monetization.
Release Schedule and Tribute
Originally planned for an April release, Kuberaa was postponed and the pre-release event rescheduled from June 13 to June 15 due to the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. The makers released a heartfelt statement:
“Our hearts go out to all affected by the devastating crash. We stand in solidarity with the grieving families.”
Kuberaa is shaping up to be more than just a film—it is a reflection of current-day socio-political complexities, media influence, and the plight of artistic integrity in the age of digital commerce. As Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika, and Jim Sarbh prepare to engage in a gripping cinematic conflict, the audience awaits to see: Can a beggar truly shake the pillars of power?
