In a candid social media exchange, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan revealed that he has officially dropped plans for Marco 2, the sequel to his violent yet commercially successful action film Marco. Responding to a fan’s query on Instagram under a video showcasing his dramatic physical transformation, the actor wrote,

“Bro, apologies but I have dropped plans to continue the Marco series. Too much negativity around the project. I’ll try my best to bring something bigger and better than Marco. Thanks for all the love and positivity. Cheers.”

The response came as a surprise to many, especially fans who were eagerly awaiting the continuation of the neo-noir action saga. Later, Mukundan doubled down on his decision, replying to another fan,

“Absolutely no chance [for Marco 2].”

The statement was met with mixed emotions across social media. While some fans expressed disappointment — with comments like “That’s sad news, chetta” and “We need Marco 2 itself. Show the courage” — others applauded the actor’s integrity and wished him well on future endeavors.

A Stormy Legacy: The Violence Controversy

Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, was not just a box-office hit, earning over ₹102.55 crore worldwide, but also a lightning rod for controversy. The film, a gritty spin-off of Mukundan’s character from the 2019 film Mikhael, was criticized for its unapologetic portrayal of violence.

So much so that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denied satellite rights to the movie, citing excessive graphic content. The controversy snowballed into public debates in Kerala regarding the role of cinema in influencing youth behavior. There were even appeals to ban its OTT release, with critics blaming such films for inspiring real-world acts of aggression among the youth.

Mukundan’s use of the term “negativity” in his statement is widely understood to refer to this fallout.

Farewell to Marco: “Hasta La Vista”

On Sunday (June 15), the actor paid a final tribute to his iconic role, posting a montage of his character Marco with the caption:

“Hasta la vista, Marco. Best A-rated farewell song, dedicated to my most loved A-rated character.”

This emotional farewell seemed to cement the end of the character’s journey — at least for now.

The Film and Its Makers

Produced by Shareef Muhammed under the Cubes Entertainments banner, Marco featured a star-studded cast including Kabir Duhan Singh, Siddique, Yukti Thareja, Anson Paul, Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan, and Durva Thaker.

The film boasted a stylish cinematic treatment with music composed by Ravi Basrur of KGF fame, cinematography by Chandru Selvaraj, and editing by Shameer Muhammed. Despite the uproar, Shareef Muhammed stood by the film, saying,

“It is not cinema that should change, but our perspective… Marco wasn’t the first film to portray violence. But I will not make any film that apparently promotes violence from here on.”

What’s Next for Unni Mukundan?

While Marco 2 may be off the table, Mukundan’s cryptic promise to bring “something bigger and better” hints at an ambitious new project in the pipeline. Fans are now keenly watching for updates from the actor, hoping that his next venture captures the same intensity — minus the controversy.
