Telugu actor-producer Vishnu Manchu, currently promoting his mythological magnum opus Kannappa, has opened up about the emotional and personal foundations that led to the film’s high-profile casting—including the selfless support of Indian cinema stalwarts Prabhas and Mohanlal, who chose not to charge a single rupee for their appearances in the film.

In a recent interview, Manchu shared insights into how he assembled the star-studded ensemble that includes Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, Malayalam icon Mohanlal, and pan-Indian heartthrob Prabhas—all of whom appear in pivotal roles in the high-concept mythological drama.

“When I decided to make the movie, I approached all of them,” said Manchu. “Mr. Akshay Kumar didn’t even know me personally, but he came on board because he had heard about my father [veteran actor Mohan Babu]. That alone meant a lot.”

Akshay Kumar, who plays Lord Shiva in the film, marks his debut in Telugu cinema with Kannappa. But while his inclusion was a matter of goodwill and professional admiration, the involvement of Mohanlal and Prabhas was deeply personal, said Manchu.

“Mohanlal sir and Prabhas are family,” he explained. “They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t ask for a fee. But for me, once the movie is complete, it’s my responsibility to hand them a cheque—because they deserve it. They’ve given me their time, their commitment, and their legacy.”

The actor emphasized that neither star had expectations of monetary compensation. “They didn’t ask for anything. But I will give them what they deserve. Not because they need it—but because it’s the right thing to do.”

The Saga of Kannappa: Mythology Meets Star Power

Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa tells the story of a young tribal hunter, an atheist-turned-devotee, who embarks on a transformative spiritual journey. Vishnu Manchu portrays the titular character whose disbelief in divinity is challenged through divine encounters and inner revelations.

The official trailer, unveiled earlier this week, provides a dramatic glimpse into the transformation arc of Kannappa. The nearly 3-minute video opens with a young boy hurling stones at a Shiva idol, only to be intercepted mid-air by Akshay Kumar’s divine presence. It sets the stage for a profound exploration of faith and sacrifice.

Prabhas appears as Rudra, a powerful avatar of Shiva, whose interactions with Manchu’s character are pivotal. His limited 30-minute screen presence, say insiders, is among the film’s most powerful highlights. Fans have hailed his intense performance and mythological gravitas as “goosebumps-inducing.”

The trailer has received a largely positive response online, with netizens calling it “a significant upgrade” from the teaser and praising its VFX, scale, and performances.

Akshay Kumar’s Telugu Debut, Mohanlal’s Grace, and a Pan-India Appeal

Apart from Prabhas and Mohanlal, Kannappa features an impressive supporting cast including Kajal Aggarwal, R. Sarathkumar, Arpit Ranka, Kaushal Manda, and Rahul Madhav. Veteran actor Mohan Babu not only acts in the film but also serves as producer alongside Vishnu Manchu under the Twenty Four Frames Factory and AVA Entertainment banners.

Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva has drawn intrigue for its restraint and spiritual strength, offering the actor a fresh avatar and audience outside his Bollywood stronghold.

Release and Expectations

Kannappa is set for a worldwide theatrical release on June 27, 2025, as a pan-Indian release in multiple languages. With its mix of mythology, star power, spiritual themes, and high-octane action, the film is poised to be one of the most ambitious Indian cinematic ventures this year.

While the grandeur and visuals are drawing eyeballs, it’s the story behind the scenes—of friendships, legacy, and selfless contributions—that is winning hearts just as much.
