In a thrilling update for fans of Indian cinema, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has confirmed that Drishyam 3—the next chapter in the widely celebrated crime thriller series—is officially in the works. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the actor revealed that shooting for the film will begin in October 2025, once again bringing back the enigmatic character Georgekutty to the big screen.
In a video shared across social platforms, Mohanlal is first seen in a close-up as Georgekutty—his eyes contemplative and face inscrutable—before the frame transitions to a behind-the-scenes shot where he is seen shaking hands with director Jeethu Joseph and producer Anthony Perumbavoor. The screen fades to black with the words: “Lights. Camera. October.”
“October 2025—the camera turns back to Georgekutty. The past never stays silent.”

This announcement marks the return of one of Indian cinema’s most compelling characters—Georgekutty, a modest cable operator whose resourcefulness and unwavering commitment to his family turned him into a cult hero. Mohanlal acknowledged the pressure of continuing a franchise with such an immense legacy but assured fans that the team was committed to crafting a fresh and gripping narrative.
Interestingly, the Malayalam version’s production will begin simultaneously with the Hindi remake, which once again stars Ajay Devgn. The Hindi adaptation of Drishyam has also been hugely successful, with Drishyam 2 (2023) grossing nearly ₹350 crore worldwide.
Legacy of Drishyam: A Pan-Indian and Global Sensation
The Drishyam franchise began in 2013 with its Malayalam original, which became an instant success and was lauded for its intelligent storytelling and emotional depth. The sequel, Drishyam 2, premiered directly on Prime Video in 2021 during the pandemic and was equally well-received.
The franchise’s legacy is unparalleled, having inspired multiple remakes across languages and cultures. The Hindi version, particularly, has become a massive commercial hit, with Ajay Devgn’s portrayal of Vijay Salgaonkar (the Hindi counterpart of Georgekutty) earning widespread acclaim.
What’s Next for Mohanlal?
Before diving back into the world of Drishyam, Mohanlal was last seen in L2: Empuraan, alongside actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran. He also recently completed Thudarum, a psychological thriller, and made his directorial debut with the ambitious yet underperforming fantasy film Barroz.
Despite the mixed success of his recent projects, Drishyam 3 is expected to restore Mohanlal’s box office dominance. With Jeethu Joseph returning as director and Aashirvaad Cinemas backing the project, expectations are sky-high for the third film to match—and possibly surpass—the tension, emotional weight, and intrigue of its predecessors.
With both Malayalam and Hindi versions moving ahead together, Drishyam 3 is shaping up to be more than just a sequel—it’s poised to be a cinematic event that rekindles a legacy and keeps audiences guessing till the very end.
