The Man of Steel is set to land in living rooms sooner than expected. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have officially announced that James Gunn’s Superman will be available on digital platforms from August 15, only five weeks after its blockbuster theatrical debut on July 11.
The film, which launched Gunn’s vision for the new DC Universe (DCU), has already grossed over $579 million worldwide according to BoxOfficeMojo. Domestically, the superhero epic raked in an impressive $331 million, while international markets contributed $247 million. Critics praised its heart, humor, and fresh take on the iconic hero, with Rotten Tomatoes listing an 81% critics’ score and a soaring 91% audience rating.
A Landmark for the New DCU
Superman marks DC Studios’ first theatrical release under Gunn’s creative leadership and the first solo Superman film since Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013. The movie stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, alongside Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.
In this rebooted narrative, Superman’s intervention in a politically charged international crisis — engineered by billionaire Lex Luthor — has unexpected fallout. With public trust shaken, the Last Son of Krypton must restore his reputation with help from friends in journalism and the superhero community.
Digital and Physical Release Plans
Fans can own Superman digitally from August 15 via major platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. This release will come loaded with bonus content, such as a gag reel, deleted scenes, and a director’s commentary by Gunn.
The 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions arrive September 23, featuring expanded behind-the-scenes material, in-depth production features, and exclusive interviews with the cast and crew.
DC Studios on the Home Release
In a statement, DC Studios said:
“Relive Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film of the new DCU, in James Gunn’s uniquely heartfelt and action-packed style. This Superman is driven by compassion and an unwavering belief in humanity’s goodness.”
While a streaming release on HBO Max is widely expected, no official date has been announced. Industry insiders suggest it could follow several weeks after the VOD launch.
With its strong critical reception, stellar cast performances, and Gunn’s distinctive mix of epic action, humor, and emotional resonance, Superman has not only rejuvenated the franchise but also set a bold tone for the DCU’s cinematic future.
