Indian cinema is poised to witness history being made. The biggest news of the decade is now official — legendary actor Kamal Haasan has confirmed that he will reunite with superstar Rajinikanth on screen after an extraordinary gap of 46 years. The announcement was made on September 7 at the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025 in Dubai, leaving fans in euphoria and setting the industry abuzz with anticipation.
When actor-comedian Sathish, who was hosting the awards night, asked Kamal about the speculation, the Ulaganayagan gave a witty yet heartfelt response. “We were united long ago, but chose to remain apart because they kept splitting a biscuit and giving us only half each. We wanted a full biscuit each, and we got it and relished it well. Now we are content with just half a biscuit again, so we have come together,” Kamal quipped, confirming the reunion.
The Thug Life star further clarified that the much-talked-about rivalry between him and Rajini was never personal. “The competition was created by the audience. For us, it was always about opportunities and respect. That’s how he has been, and that’s how I have been. So while this reunion might be surprising from a business perspective, we aren’t that surprised. We are just glad that something that should have happened long ago is finally happening,” Kamal said, striking a nostalgic note.
Though details of the project remain under wraps, speculation is rife that Lokesh Kanagaraj will direct the film. Lokesh, who previously helmed Rajinikanth’s recent blockbuster Coolie and Kamal Haasan’s 2022 hit Vikram, has often expressed his dream of uniting the two titans in one film. For fans, he is the most fitting choice — a director who has already mastered the art of orchestrating multi-starrers with flair.
This announcement is monumental for Tamil cinema, as both Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth began their careers under the mentorship of the late K. Balachander in the 1970s. Together, they have delivered timeless classics like Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, 16 Vayathinile, Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, and Ninaithale Inikkum. Their last major collaboration as leads was in Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum (1979). Since then, they have occasionally appeared together in cameo roles, but a full-fledged reunion has eluded fans for decades.
Kamal also hinted at the project’s staggering scale. “The trade will be surprised by the numbers involved. But for me, this is another chance. People may think it’s a competition, but I see it as an opportunity to work with him again. We always wanted to produce each other’s films, and now it’s finally happening,” he revealed.
While Kamal has officially confirmed the collaboration, insiders suggest that the project may take more than a year to materialize. Still, the buzz is already historic — uniting two of India’s greatest actors in one frame under the vision of a director who thrives on ambitious storytelling.
For fans of Rajini and Kamal, this isn’t just a film. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic festival.
