‘Awards are Bullsh*t’: Actor Vishal Slams Film Recognition System, Including National Awards

Actor Vishal Awards Statement

In a powerful and unfiltered statement that has ignited debate across the film industry, popular actor and producer Vishal has openly denounced the entire system of film awards, including India’s prestigious National Film Awards. Speaking on his newly launched podcast, ‘Yours Frankly Vishal,’ the actor questioned the legitimacy and authority of judging panels, asserting that only the audience’s verdict truly matters.

Questioning the Jury’s Mandate

The core of Vishal’s critique lies in the fundamentally undemocratic nature of the awards process. Translating from his Tamil remarks, Vishal expressed an absolute lack of faith in the system, calling it “craziness” (or in a more colourful translation, “bullsh*t”).

“I don’t believe in awards. That is craziness,”* the actor declared. “I’m saying this even about the National Awards. How can a handful of people—say eight individuals—sit and decide who is the best actor, or which is the best film, on behalf of seven crore people? Are they the bosses?

He suggested a radical shift to a public survey or poll as the only legitimate way to determine the merit of cinematic achievements, arguing that public endorsement is “what is important.” For Vishal, the true measure of success is the love and sustained support from the audience that has powered his two-decade-long career.

A Vow Against Accepting Trophies

The actor went a step further to articulate his personal disdain for the physical trophies. Vishal made it clear that his stance is not rooted in personal resentment over a lack of recognition, stating: “I’m not saying this because I haven’t received awards.”

He revealed a striking commitment to his principles by vowing to reject any future accolades:

“If I get an award, I will throw it in the dustbin. And don’t misunderstand me. If it happens to be made of gold, I will simply pawn or sell it and use that money entirely for annadanam (charity feeding). I do not accept awards.”

The bold declarations come just as Vishal is set to direct his upcoming film, ‘Magudam,’ and maintain his long-standing reputation as an outspoken figure on industry matters. His remarks have once again brought to the forefront the perpetual debate over the transparency, politics, and relevance of film award ceremonies in contemporary cinema.
