Moonwalk Unveils A.R. Rahman’s Rare 5-Song Vocal Performance; Reunits with Prabhu Deva After 27 Years

AR Rahman Prabhu Deva Moonwalk Reunion

A Historic Reunion, A Revolutionary Score

In a massive announcement shaking the foundations of Indian cinema, the upcoming film Moonwalk, starring the legendary Prabhu Deva, has confirmed an unprecedented detail: Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman has not only composed the music but has also rendered the vocals for all five songs in the album. This is widely considered an exceptionally rare occurrence in the composer’s three-decade career, amplifying the excitement surrounding his long-awaited reunion with the ‘Dance Storm’ after 27 years.

The last time the “Isai Puyal” (Music Storm) and the “Nadhana Puyal” (Dance Storm) collaborated on a full album was for the iconic 1997 film, Minsara Kanavu (Electric Dreams). The director and producer, Manoj Nirmala Sreedharan, who also serves as the Founder and CEO of Behindwoods, emphasized the historical significance of the partnership. “The goal was to make the theatre the happiest place for families for two and a half hours,” Sreedharan stated at the film’s promotional event, adding that the effort was to recreate the infectious joy felt by watching their previous landmark collaborations.

The Power of the Scratch: Why Rahman Sang All Five

Sreedharan revealed the persistent effort required to convince Rahman to sing the entire soundtrack. According to the director, the initial scratch recordings—often featuring the composer’s own voice—held an “instant happiness” and a “spiritual happiness” that subsequent top singers, despite their immense talent, could not quite replicate.

“It is nothing against anyone,” Sreedharan clarified, “but A.R. Rahman is the symbol of happiness and the symbol of inspiration for this project. When he sings, that joy is amplified three times.”

Rahman, who is notoriously selective about his playback singing commitments, explained his initial reluctance, noting, “People think that, as a music producer and composer, I have a duty to find who would be better for the song.” However, he ultimately conceded to the director’s passion, creating an album that fans are already hailing as one of the most personalized and anticipated releases in recent memory.

Five Songs, Five Celebrations

The Moonwalk album centers around a central theme: Celebration. Each of the five tracks embodies a different aspect of life, featuring a meticulously planned choreography schedule designed to honor Prabhu Deva’s legacy. The songs are:

  1. Yethu: Tagged as the “Celebration of Happiness,” this song features Prabhu Deva alongside supporting cast members like Yogi Babu, Aju Varghese, and Sathish. Choreography was handled by Sekhar VJ, with lyrics by Vivek.

  2. Macarena: The “Celebration of Friendship,” this track is a fusion of three distinct musical genres by Rahman and was filmed in the timeless setting of Mahabalipuram. Prabhu Deva’s performance here is described as a “next level” spectacle involving young dancers, choreographed by the duo Piyush & Shazia, with lyrics penned by Arivu.

  3. Mayile: The “Celebration of Hard Work,” this song saw Prabhu Deva exhibit extraordinary dedication, rehearsing for a full month—twice the time spent on the previous tracks. The song, which has the emotional core “Battle for my People,” features choreography by Sekhar VJ and lyrics by Vishnu Edavan.

  4. Tinga: Marking the “Celebration of Love,” this track is dedicated to both those who are in love and those who have recently experienced a breakup. The song features lyrics by Vignesh and choreography by Sekhar VJ.

  5. Jiger: The final track, “Celebration of Life,” carries a unique symbolic element, featuring a ‘baby donkey’ to reflect the mundane but precious elements found in everyone’s life journey. Lyrics are by Sathyan, with choreography by Piyush & Shazia.

The film, described as a full-length family comedy, is currently in production and is slated for a Summer 2026 release, expected in either April or May, ensuring a highly energetic cinematic event.
