Will Karthi’s ‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ Make the Dec 12 Date? High Court Hearing Set for Monday

Vaa Vaathiyaar Trailer and Release Update

The road to the silver screen for actor Karthi’s highly anticipated Vaa Vaathiyaar has taken a dramatic turn. Just as the makers unveiled a high-energy trailer showcasing the actor in a never-before-seen avatar, the Madras High Court has issued an interim injunction staying the film’s release. The movie, directed by the acclaimed Nalan Kumarasamy, is currently scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on December 12, 2025, but a financial dispute has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the premiere.

High-Voltage Trailer Meets Legal Roadblock

On Saturday, December 6, the film’s team, led by Studio Green, released the official trailer to a rapturous response. The promo features Karthi as a quirky, safari-suit-wearing police officer who is also a devout fan of the legendary Puratchi Thalaivar M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). The trailer, shared by actor Suriya Sivakumar with hearty wishes, teases a “wacky entertainer” filled with Nalan Kumarasamy’s signature offbeat humor, courtroom drama, and stylized action sequences set to Santhosh Narayanan’s pulsating score.

However, the celebratory mood was dampened by a court order stemming from a petition filed by financier Arjunlal Sunderdas. The petitioner claims that the production house, Studio Green, owes unsettled dues amounting to over ₹10.35 crore (which has reportedly ballooned to over ₹21 crore with interest). Consequently, the Madras High Court has ordered an interim stay on the release of both Vaa Vaathiyaar and its Telugu dubbed version, Annagaru Vostharu.

The “MGR” Connection and Quirky Cop Avatar

Despite the legal tussle, the trailer has successfully piqued audience curiosity. Karthi appears to be channeling the spirit of MGR, with dialogue references like “Ungal Veetu Pillai” and visuals of him riding a white horse masked like Zorro—a nostalgic nod to MGR’s classic swashbucklers. The film also stars Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, and Rajkiran, the latter playing a role that seemingly mirrors the protagonist’s obsession with the late matinee idol.

“He’s walking in with aura,” tweeted Studio Green, sharing stills of Karthi looking dapper yet eccentric. The director, Nalan Kumarasamy, known for cult hits like Soodhu Kavvum, appears to have crafted a film that defies standard genre tropes, blending mass masala elements with surreal comedy.

Race Against Time: The December 8 Hearing

The clock is ticking for the production team. With the Pre-Release Event scheduled for December 8, 2025, at the Lady Andal School Auditorium in Chennai, the makers are pressing forward with promotions. The poster for the Telugu trailer launch, titled Annagaru Vostharu, indicates that director Harish Shankar is set to unveil the Telugu version today at 5 PM.

Industry insiders are keeping a close watch on the High Court’s next hearing, slated for Monday, December 8. The court will decide whether to lift the ban, contingent on Studio Green settling the financial dispute. If resolved, the film will proceed with its December 12 release as planned; otherwise, fans may face a postponement.
