The Spark of the Conflict
In a surprising turn of events that has strained the camaraderie between the Telugu and Tamil film industries, veteran actor Rajendra Prasad has found himself at the center of a brewing storm. The controversy erupted during the recently held “Kantha Rao Memorial National Award” ceremony in Hyderabad. While the event was intended to honor the legacy of the late Telugu actor Kantha Rao, it instead became the birthplace of a viral dispute following a speech by Prasad.
While accepting the prestigious award, Rajendra Prasad chose to highlight the immense talent of Kantha Rao. However, in an attempt to elevate Rao’s stature, he made a comparison that has been widely described as “crude,” “mocking,” and “highly disrespectful.”
The Remark That Crossed the Line
According to reports and viral video clips from the event, Rajendra Prasad stated in Telugu that even the “great Tamil actor MGR” was intimidated by Kantha Rao’s acting prowess. He reportedly claimed that upon seeing Rao’s performance, MGR would exclaim “Amma Baboi” and suggested, in a sarcastic tone, that the legend would even “wet his pants” in fear or awe.
The tone and body language used during the speech were perceived by many as derogatory toward M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), who is not only a cinema icon but a revered former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and a Bharat Ratna recipient.
The Backlash from Kollywood
The reaction from the Tamil film fraternity was swift and uncompromising. Leading the charge, actor and General Secretary of the Nadigar Sangam, Vishal, took to social media to express his disappointment.
“It is shocking and repelling to see and hear the recent comments of senior actor Shri Rajendra Prasad… Bringing down and demeaning another legendary actor #MGR ayya, who is still remembered forever, is not going down well with the sentiments of our people,” Vishal tweeted.
Vishal further requested that Prasad “tender an apology” to put an end to the issue, noting that he would defend any actor of Prasad’s stature if the roles were reversed.
Producer and film historian G. Dhananjeyan also slammed the remarks, calling them “ridiculous and totally unacceptable.” He urged the Tamil Film Industry to officially condemn the statement and demand a withdrawal of the comment.
Legacy and Sentiment
The outrage stems from the deep-rooted respect the people of Tamil Nadu hold for MGR. Known as ‘Puratchi Thalaivar’ (Revolutionary Leader), MGR’s contribution to cinema and politics remains unmatched. Reducing such a historical figure to a “crude comparison” for the sake of a stage speech has been viewed as a lapse in professional decorum by a senior artist like Rajendra Prasad.
While appreciating the achievements of Kantha Rao is valid, the consensus among fans and industry insiders is that “praising one legend should not involve belittling another.” As of now, the industry awaits a formal clarification or apology from Rajendra Prasad to de-escalate the rising tensions.
