The ‘Shero’ Rises: ‘Thaai Kizhavi’ Shatters Records and Reinvents the Commercial Formula
In an industry often dominated by “mass” heroes and high-octane action thrillers, a quiet yet thunderous revolution has taken place at the Tamil box office. The film Thaai Kizhavi, starring the legendary Radhika Sarathkumar in a titular role that defies traditional grandmother tropes, has emerged as the “savior of theaters” during a notably dry period for the trade.
The film’s journey from a niche concept to a commercial juggernaut is nothing short of inspirational. Within just three days of its release, the production house, Sivakarthikeyan Productions (SK Productions) and Passion Studios, officially announced that the film had crossed the 22+ Crore mark in worldwide Gross Box Office Collection (GBOC). This is a staggering figure for a film that marketed itself on the strength of a senior female lead and a grounded, relatable narrative.
“For the first time in Kollywood, a female lead has signed a Salary plus Profit Share deal even before the film’s blockbuster run began,” sources close to the production revealed. This move signifies a massive shift in how veteran actresses are valued in the industry—a true moment of empowerment both on and off-screen.
The film’s momentum didn’t stop at the opening weekend. By its 17th day, Thaai Kizhavi achieved a rare milestone for a medium-budget film: 1.04 Million ticket sales on BookMyShow. Industry analysts point out that the film had “No Big Budget, No Big Star, and No Big Director,” yet it managed to dominate the screens, proving that the audience is hungry for original storytelling.
The veteran actor Kamal Haasan reportedly offered words of wisdom to the team during the film’s development. As Radhika Sarathkumar shared on social media, Kamal Haasan noted that even if the film didn’t run, her performance would be praised; but if it succeeded, it would be a win for the director, the technicians, and every actor involved. Today, that prophecy has come true.
Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan with a soulful musical score by Nivas K Prasanna, the film has turned into one of the most profitable ventures of 2026. Its success is a testament to the vision of Sivakarthikeyan, who presented the film, and producers Sudhan Sundaram and Jayaram, who believed in the “power of the Kizhavi.”
