In a dramatic turn of events just hours before its global launch, the highly anticipated spy thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge has encountered significant logistical and technical roadblocks. Directed by the visionary Aditya Dhar, the sequel to the 2025 blockbuster was set to take the box office by storm with a multi-language release. However, reports from industry insiders suggest that while the Hindi version remains on schedule for its paid previews today, March 18, the Tamil and Telugu versions are facing a “doubtful” status for their scheduled premiere slots.
The Logistics Nightmare: Hard Drives vs. Digital Delivery
The primary cause of the disruption appears to be a delay in the delivery of physical hard drives containing the movie’s content. While modern “digital delivery” systems allow theaters to download the film instantly, many screens—particularly in North America and specific chains across India—still rely on physical drives for high-quality projection.
“The second half of the film underwent last-minute re-edits to align with censorship requirements, which delayed the final ‘mastering’ of the hard drives,” noted a trade analyst.
As a result, while the Hindi version reached major hubs on time, the localized dubbed versions for South India have lagged, leading to the cancellation of several preview shows.
CBFC Crackdown: Brutality vs. The Big Screen
Beyond the technical glitches, the film has also been the subject of intense scrutiny by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Despite being granted an ‘A’ (Adults Only) rating, the board demanded a total of 21 modifications. These edits primarily targeted scenes of “extreme brutality,” including graphic sequences involving beheadings and physical violence.
The domestic Indian version now stands at a runtime of 229 minutes (3 hours and 49 minutes), making it approximately 6 minutes shorter than the international cut, which remains at 235 minutes. Fans have taken to social media to express their frustration, questioning why an ‘A’ rated film requires such heavy sanitization. One fan remarked on X (formerly Twitter), “If it’s already for adults, why cut the intensity? We want the director’s original vision!”
Box Office Stakes and Fan Anticipation
Despite these hiccups, the hype for the film is undeniable. With a star-studded cast featuring Ranveer Singh (reprising his role as the undercover agent Hamza/Jaskirat), Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna, the film has already amassed a staggering ₹37 crore in advance bookings.
The story, which delves into the dark underbelly of Karachi and the dismantling of terror networks, is positioned as one of the most ambitious Indian films ever made. While the Kannada previews have reportedly been canceled in several regions, distributors are working around the clock to ensure the wide release on March 19 remains unaffected.
