Stars Align for Animal Rights: Raveena Tandon Appointed PETA India Honorary Director Amid Star-Studded Victory Gala

The Lead: A New Era of Advocacy

In a glamorous yet deeply purposeful weekend at the Willingdon Sports Club in Tardeo, the atmosphere was charged with more than just celebrity presence—it was fueled by a mission of mercy. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India convened its annual Victory Celebrations to reflect on a year of monumental strides for animal liberation. The highlight of the evening was the historic appointment of National Film Award-winning actor Raveena Tandon as an Honorary Director for the organization.

Tandon, who has been a “tireless volunteer advocate” for over twenty years, now joins an elite global circle. She is only the second person in India to hold this title, following in the footsteps of actor John Abraham. Globally, she stands alongside icons like Pamela Anderson and James Cromwell, cementing her status as a titan of the animal rights movement.

The “Anupamaa” Effect: Rupali Ganguly’s Humanitarian Milestone

The accolades didn’t stop with Tandon. The beloved star of the hit series Anupamaa, Rupali Ganguly, was graced with the PETA India Humanitarian Award. Ganguly has been a vocal opponent of the “archaic and cruel” horse-drawn carriages in Kolkata and a fierce proponent of the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” philosophy.

During her acceptance speech, an emotional Ganguly stated:

“Animals, or as I choose to call them, the voiceless innocents, depend on us to be their ally. Adoption saves lives, and compassion makes a better society for all. They are not for our amusement or entertainment.”

Innovation in Devotion and Design

PETA India also recognized those bridging the gap between tradition and technology. Rajkumar P.I., the vegan priest of the Irinjadapilly Sree Krishna Temple, received the Compassionate Leadership Award. He made history by welcoming a mechanical elephant into his place of worship, proving that devotion does not require the captivity of sentient beings.

In New Delhi, the celebrations continued at The Park, where digital influencer and comic Jeeveshu Ahluwalia bagged the Digital Activism Award for his online campaigns promoting the rescue of community animals. Simultaneously, high-end jewelry designer Rahul Luthra (Raabta by Rahul) was honored with the Progressive Designer Award. Luthra has pioneered “ethical luxury” by banning feathers and integrating plant-based leathers into his collections.

Raveena Tandon: A Lifetime of Service

Tandon’s appointment is not merely ceremonial; it is a recognition of a staggering body of work. From her personal efforts rescuing stray animals off the frantic streets of Mumbai to her high-level advocacy, her impact is undeniable. Recently, alongside her daughter Rasha Thadani, Tandon gifted a life-sized mechanical elephant to Karnataka’s Thousand Pillars Jain Temple.

Her advocacy spans the spectrum of animal cruelty:

Upon her appointment, Tandon remarked:

“I am deeply committed to protecting animals in every way I can. My heart has been opened to empathy that does not differentiate between species.”

The Global Stand Against Speciesism

The event featured a keynote by Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA entities worldwide, who challenged the audience to reject “speciesism”—the human-supremacist view that animals are ours to exploit. PETA India Director Poorva Joshipura and Vice President Sachin Bangera emphasized that these awardees are “animal liberation powerhouses.”

As the evening concluded, the message was clear: whether through mechanical elephants, feather-free jewelry, or legislative advocacy, the tide is turning. With leaders like Tandon and Ganguly at the helm, the vision of a world where animals are respected as “living, feeling beings” is moving closer to reality.
