After the success of Sundarapandian, Sasikumar returned to the silver screen with Kutti Puli, a commercial mass pot-boiler. Directed by Muthiah and produced by S. Muruganandam and N. Puranna of Village Theatres, Kutti Puli was released by Sun Pictures and Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies. Lakshmi Menon, who had romanced Sasikumar in Sundarapandian, was the heroine.
Music by Ghibran of Vaagai Sooda Vaa and Vathikuchi fame was more of folk and the so called ‘kuthu’ song was part of the soundtrack. As Kutti Puli, Sasikumar played the son of Saranya Ponvannan; the story was about his relationship with his mother and his native land. Like other Sasikumar movies, Kutti Puli also had love with violence and betrayal as the backdrop plus his normal ingredients of sentiment and friendship with sacrifice.
Though the movie received negative to mixed reviews from critics, the general public made it a commercial success. It enjoyed a good opening and we opine that its release date and marketing played a great role in this success.
