Fans were treated to a grand event as the much-anticipated film Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel and starring the legendary Rajinikanth, had its teaser and music launch last night at the Nehru Indoor Stadium. Produced by Lyca Productions, the film’s score is composed by the acclaimed Anirudh Ravichander, marking his fourth collaboration with Rajinikanth.
The star-studded cast includes Indian cinema icons Amitabh Bachchan, making his Tamil debut, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, and VJ Rakshan. The Vettaiyan teaser, released earlier yesterday, was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, as eager fans celebrated its arrival with much fanfare.
Rajinikanth’s Electrifying Speech
In a heartfelt and candid speech, Rajinikanth shared insights into the making of the film and his discussions with director Gnanavel. “I told Gnanavel that a message-driven film wouldn’t suit me. The movie must be commercial, something that people can celebrate,” Rajinikanth said, referencing his past preference for high-octane blockbusters. He further added, “If Sivaji Ganesan were still with us, he would have been perfect for Amitabh’s role.”
Rajinikanth revealed that Gnanavel took a few days to craft the perfect script that balanced commercial appeal and his unique style. The actor made it clear that he didn’t want a movie in the style of popular directors Nelson or Lokesh Kanagaraj but rather in Gnanavel’s own storytelling manner. Rajinikanth referred to this as a moment of tension, especially following the massive success of his previous hit Jailer. He emphasized the pressure of maintaining success, saying, “After a hit, you have to maintain consistency. That’s the tension I’m feeling after Jailer.”
He also expressed deep affection for Anirudh, who composed the music for Vettaiyan. “Anirudh is like my son,” said Rajinikanth, adding that he was adamant about bringing him on board for the film. The actor’s words moved the composer to tears.
Gnanavel Reflects on Vettaiyan
Director TJ Gnanavel, who previously received accolades for his film Jai Bhim, thanked actor Suriya for opening doors for him. He credited the success of Jai Bhim for his current position, stating that his collaboration with Rajinikanth was a dream come true. “After Jai Bhim, I received a message from Rajinikanth’s daughter, Soundarya, asking if I had a story for him,” Gnanavel said. He revealed that Soundarya selected Vettaiyan from the two scripts he pitched.
Gnanavel noted the immense responsibility of writing for a star like Rajinikanth. “When you write for Rajinikanth, the scenes automatically become mass moments. He has that magic,” said the director, who was visibly proud of his work. He also expressed his gratitude towards Amitabh Bachchan for joining the project, calling it an honor to work with such iconic figures. “The story itself chose these actors, and not the other way around,” Gnanavel explained, adding that the film naturally evolved into a pan-Indian project due to its scale and talent.
Amitabh Bachchan Joins the Celebrations
Though Amitabh Bachchan could not attend the event in person, he sent a video message expressing his excitement about working with Rajinikanth once again. “Rajinikanth is not only a great actor but also a dear friend. It’s an honor to act alongside him after 33 years,” said Bachchan, referring to their last film together, Hum (1991). He shared anecdotes from the set, recalling how Rajinikanth’s simplicity and humility left a lasting impression on him.
Manju Warrier, Rana Daggubati, and Anirudh Share Their Experiences
Manju Warrier, one of the leading actresses in the film, expressed her joy at being part of such a prestigious project. “I’m thrilled to have worked alongside Rajinikanth and to have had the opportunity to portray a significant role,” she said. Warrier mentioned how surreal it felt to perform with the superstar and praised the team for their dedication.
Rana Daggubati, who plays a pivotal role in Vettaiyan, described his experience as a learning opportunity. “It was a stroke of luck that I got to work with Rajini sir. I’ve learned so much from him, and I could talk for two hours about the experience,” Rana said.
Composer Anirudh also shared his excitement, calling the project a unique milestone. “This film is in a completely different genre compared to the ones I’ve done with Rajini sir before,” Anirudh said, hinting at some experimental and innovative sounds in the score. He added, “This film is special, not just because it’s a Rajinikanth film, but because of the unique collaboration of talents.”
The Event: A Spectacle for Fans
As expected, the Vettaiyan audio launch attracted thousands of fans, with many traveling from neighboring states. While the event tickets were sold out, an unexpected number of fans gathered outside the Nehru Stadium, leading to a chaotic scene. Despite having tickets, many were denied entry, causing frustration among the fans. Some speculated that fake tickets may have circulated, compounding the confusion. This incident echoed a similar controversy during AR Rahman’s recent concert in Chennai.
Nevertheless, the highlight of the evening was Rajinikanth’s surprise performance of the “Manasilayo” hook step from the film alongside Anirudh. The actor’s unexpected dance move set social media on fire, with fans sharing the viral moment across platforms. Rajinikanth’s infectious energy and evident joy left audiences buzzing with excitement for the film’s release.
Release and Expectations
Vettaiyan is set to release on October 10 in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada, and the anticipation for the film is at an all-time high. Rajinikanth’s fanbase, which spans generations, eagerly awaits this new chapter in his illustrious career, especially after the massive success of Jailer.
With a powerful cast, a seasoned director, and the magic of Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan sharing the screen again, Vettaiyan is shaping up to be a cinematic spectacle that fans across India won’t want to miss.
