The ongoing dispute between Tamil superstar Dhanush and actress Nayanthara, along with her husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, has taken dramatic turns, with allegations, open letters, and cryptic social media posts making headlines. The controversy revolves around the alleged unauthorized use of behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Nayanthara’s Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale.
The Legal Dispute: Copyright vs. Creative Freedom
Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films, filed a lawsuit accusing Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan, and their production house, Rowdy Pictures, of using unauthorized footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The legal notice demands ₹10 crore in damages and the removal of the clips from the documentary.
Nayanthara and her team, however, argue that the footage belongs to her personal archives, captured on personal devices during the film’s production, and was never officially owned by Wunderbar Films. “People don’t understand that BTS is part of a contract now. This wasn’t the case 10 years ago,” she explained in an interview.
Justice Abdul Quiddhose, presiding over the case at the Madras High Court, has instructed Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan, and others involved to clarify the allegations.
Nayanthara’s Attempts to Reconcile
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nayanthara revealed her efforts to reconcile with Dhanush. According to her, she tried reaching out to him through his manager and even suggested moving past the issue of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the disputed footage.
“I just wanted a phone call with him to understand what the issue was. Why was he angry at us? Where did the misunderstanding start? I wanted to clear the air,” she said. However, Dhanush reportedly refused to take her calls. “We didn’t have to be the best of friends, but I wanted to at least be able to say ‘hi’ if we saw each other in the future. But he never spoke.”
The Fallout: Social Media Statements and Public Criticism
Nayanthara’s frustration culminated in a three-page-long post on Instagram, where she accused Dhanush of holding a personal grudge against her and her husband. “The vengeance that you have been festering against the film, my partner, and I, doesn’t just affect us but the people who have given their effort and time towards this project,” she wrote.
She further questioned his character, stating, “I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in front of your innocent fans. Clearly, you do not practice what you preach, at least not for me and my partner.”
Amid the controversy, Nayanthara also shared a cryptic Instagram story about karma, which read: “Karma Says!!! When you destroy someone’s life with lies, take it as a loan, it will come back to you with interest.” While indirect, the timing of the post strongly hinted at her ongoing conflict with Dhanush.
Vignesh Shivan’s Silence
As the dispute escalated, Vignesh Shivan deactivated his X (formerly Twitter) account, fueling speculation about his withdrawal. Though his Instagram remains active, he has refrained from commenting on the matter.
Nayanthara’s Perspective on the Legal Battle
In her interview, Nayanthara explained her decision to go public with her grievances. “It was never meant to be a controversy or a publicity stunt. The legal notice came just before the release [of the Netflix documentary], and we had to retaliate.”
She also shed light on the emotional significance of the disputed footage. “The only thing we wanted in the film was those four lines. They meant a lot to us, as they summed up our life, our love, our kids. It was very personal. But when that didn’t happen, we were okay with not using the lines,” she said.
Standing Her Ground
Nayanthara defended her decision to speak out on social media, saying, “I only have to be scared when I’m fabricating something. If I’m not doing that, I don’t have to be scared. If I didn’t speak out now, when things had already gone too far, I don’t think anyone would have the courage to stand up for themselves ever again.”
A Controversy That Reflects Broader Issues
What began as a legal dispute over copyright has evolved into a highly publicized clash of egos, values, and emotions. The outcome of this case will have significant implications, not just for the parties involved, but for broader industry norms surrounding intellectual property, artistic collaboration, and personal relationships in the entertainment world.
For now, both sides remain steadfast in their positions, with the legal and emotional battles far from over.
