Two years after taking the internet by storm with her now-iconic dance moves and blood-curdling rampage, Blumhouse’s breakout AI horror hit M3GAN is back with a vengeance—and an upgrade. Universal Pictures has unveiled the first full trailer for “M3GAN 2.0,” teasing a genre-blending sequel that swaps slasher scares for a cybernetic showdown.
Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, from a script he co-wrote with Akela Cooper, the sequel sees Allison Williams reprising her role as Gemma, now a renowned author and outspoken advocate for government oversight of artificial intelligence. Her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), once a vulnerable child, is now a rebellious teen navigating a tense relationship with her overprotective guardian.
But peace is short-lived. M3GAN’s core technology—thought to be buried for good—has been stolen and weaponized by a powerful defense contractor. Their creation? Amelia—a sleek, militarized android programmed for infiltration and annihilation, played by Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim Uprising). As Amelia begins to question her programming and rebel against her human creators, Gemma finds herself facing a catastrophic threat.
Her only hope? The very AI she once destroyed.
Locked in a temporary shell resembling a toy, M3GAN—voiced once more by Jenna Davis and physically portrayed by Amie Donald—pleads for release. “Put me in a body and let me stop her,” she urges. With civilization at stake, Gemma makes the fateful decision to resurrect and enhance M3GAN, transforming her into a faster, stronger, and even more formidable force.
The trailer doesn’t hold back on tone, leaning heavily into stylized camp and action-packed sci-fi. From skydiving stunts to razor-sharp one-liners (“Hang on to your vaginas,” M3GAN quips mid-battle), this sequel looks to embrace its cult status with open arms and flying kicks. Comparisons to Terminator 2 abound, and with good reason—the killer-turned-savior trope has never looked this sassy.
Returning cast members include Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, with new faces Aristotle Athari (Hacks), Timm Sharp (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), and Jemaine Clement joining the ensemble. Horror titan James Wan, who co-created the original story with Cooper, returns as producer alongside Jason Blum and Allison Williams.
And the M3GAN-verse doesn’t stop here. A spinoff titled “Soulm8te” is already in the works, set to release on January 2, 2026. This standalone film will explore a darker, more erotic psychological territory as a grieving widower programs his AI partner into something far more dangerous than love.
