Just days before its scheduled theatrical release, Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan’s emotional comeback drama, is facing an unexpected hurdle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board has reportedly demanded two unspecified cuts, which both Khan and director RS Prasanna have firmly opposed—leading to a standoff that could delay the film’s June 20 release.
The film, which sensitively portrays the journey of ten specially-abled children who are mentored into becoming a winning football team, has yet to receive its censor certificate—a crucial step required for advance bookings and distribution.
According to sources close to the production, Khan is expected to make a final appeal before the CBFC’s Examining Committee by Monday (June 16), hoping for a resolution in time to allow certification and facilitate advance ticket sales.
“We’re hopeful that the issue will be resolved by Tuesday,” Khan told the media. “The re-evaluation is underway. We believe the film, in its current form, deserves to be seen unaltered.”
Creative Integrity vs. Bureaucracy
Producer Sheetal Talwar, who has seen the film, voiced strong opposition to any proposed edits.
“This film is emotionally rich and socially uplifting—asking for cuts is akin to editing Taare Zameen Par or The Sound of Music. It’s unnecessary and unacceptable,” she said.
Echoing the sentiment, producer Prerna Arora criticized the inconsistency in CBFC decisions, remarking on the leniency shown toward films with vulgarity and innuendo while Sitaare Zameen Par, a family-oriented, socially conscious film, is being scrutinized.
Ironically, while the film awaits CBFC approval in India, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has already certified it with a 12A rating—deeming it suitable for viewers aged 12 and above, with parental guidance.
The film’s runtime is reportedly 2 hours and 35 minutes. It is co-produced by Aamir Khan Productions and is seen as a ‘spiritual successor’ to Khan’s critically acclaimed Taare Zameen Par (2007).
Behind the Scenes: Aamir’s Vulnerable Comeback
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par marks Aamir Khan’s return to the big screen after his three-year hiatus following the underwhelming response to Laal Singh Chaddha. According to Prasanna, the film was born from an emotional space—both in terms of its message and the phase in Aamir’s life when it was conceived.
In a candid interview, Prasanna recalled,
“When I met him in 2020, he seemed emotionally raw, vulnerable. But that only made me respect him more. He’s not just a superstar—he’s a real human being who speaks from the heart.”
Comparing Khan to Bhuvan from Lagaan, Prasanna praised his unwavering commitment:
“He’s always present for the director. Day or night, he’s there. He leads, inspires, and protects.”
After the lukewarm reception of Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir reportedly contemplated quitting films. But fan encounters—especially at airports—played a crucial role in lifting his spirits.
“People told him, ‘We love Laal Singh Chaddha. Don’t quit.’ That kind of affection healed him,” shared Prasanna.
With massive expectations riding on Sitaare Zameen Par, the pressure is undeniable. Yet, Prasanna remains hopeful:
“We’ve poured our hearts into this. All we want is for the audience—the real gods of cinema—to experience it as we intended.”
As the film teeters on the edge of either last-minute clearance or release-day chaos, the industry is watching closely. If the CBFC does not grant certification by June 17, a delay seems inevitable.
