Tamil cinema’s mass icon Vijayakanth’s centenary film Captain Prabhakaran is set for a grand comeback. The 1991 action-drama, which turned into one of the biggest successes of the actor’s career, will hit theatres again on August 22 in a fully restored 4K Ultra HD format, 34 years after its original release.

The announcement was accompanied by a trailer and music re-launch event at Chennai’s Kamala Theatre, which turned into a heartfelt celebration of Vijayakanth’s career and enduring persona. Filmmakers, co-stars, and family members shared anecdotes that highlighted not only the actor’s professional achievements but also his generosity and values.

The Original Phenomenon

Directed by R.K. Selvamani and produced by Ibrahim Rowther, Captain Prabhakaran released during Tamil New Year in 1991. While many Tamil stars struggled with their 100th film, Vijayakanth scored one of the biggest hits of his career. The movie ran for over 300 days in theatres and cemented his position alongside Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan as a box office powerhouse.

Known for its sweeping action sequences, Ilaiyaraaja’s powerful score, and the evergreen dance number “Aattama Therottama” featuring Ramya Krishnan, the film became a cultural touchstone. Selvamani recalled that the role originally considered for Saranya Ponvannan eventually went to Ramya Krishnan, who brought unforgettable screen presence to the part.

Emotional Tributes from Co-stars and Crew

Actor-director Singampuli shared a lighthearted yet touching story about his early days, crediting Vijayakanth’s kindness for keeping him in the industry. “Captain never let anyone go hungry. He gave opportunities without expecting anything in return,” he said.

Ramya Krishnan fondly remembered how the film revived her Tamil career after a stint in Telugu cinema. “Even today, people remember and celebrate ‘Aattama Therottama’. That song gave me a special place in the hearts of fans, and for that I’m grateful to Captain and director Selvamani,” she said.

Director A.R. Murugadoss revealed how the film shaped his storytelling approach. “Captain Prabhakaran taught me the value of narrative structure. Its delayed hero entry and strong villain arcs influenced my films like Thuppakki and Ramanaa,” he said, adding that Vijayakanth had even presided over his wedding.

Family Pride and Personal Memories

Vijayakanth’s son, Vijay Prabhakaran, revealed that his name itself was inspired by the film and the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. “Appa always told me, ‘Even if I am not there, this name will lift you.’ Being his son is the greatest title I could ever have,” he said emotionally.

A New Chapter for a Classic

The re-release is being presented by Karthik Venkatesan under Sparrow Cinemas. With restored visuals, remastered sound, and the same adrenaline-pumping action that made it a 90s phenomenon, the makers hope the film will captivate both nostalgic fans and a new generation of viewers.

As director Selvamani put it, “Vijayakanth was the same on screen and off – genuine, committed, and principled. Captain Prabhakaran was made with trust and passion, and I believe that spirit will resonate again when the lights dim on August 22.”
