The Indian film industry has been shaken by the arrest of a 21-year-old man from Bihar who allegedly ran a sophisticated, nationwide movie piracy network. Identified as Ashwani Kumar, the accused was apprehended by the Cyber Crime division of the Hyderabad Police during a raid on his luxurious duplex house in Patna. Police seized an array of high-tech equipment, including computers, servers, and other hacking tools, which were central to his operation.
A Self-Taught Sensation in the Underworld
What has particularly stunned investigators and industry veterans alike is Kumar’s method of learning and operation. According to police reports, Kumar is self-taught, having acquired his skills in hacking, server management, and malware injection techniques through YouTube tutorials. He reportedly mastered Java and Python, leveraging this knowledge to develop scripts and deploy malware to illegally access and download films directly from distribution servers.
The investigation revealed that Kumar was responsible for the first-day, high-definition (HD) leaks of over 135 films, including highly anticipated titles such as Pushpa 2, Game Changer, Good Bad Ugly, and various Hindi movies. His criminal enterprise involved hacking into the servers of two major Indian film distribution networks in 2024, a claim the companies initially denied until the full extent of the breach was exposed.
A Network of Millions and an Audacious Demonstration
Kumar’s piracy ring was not just about stealing content; it was a lucrative, auction-style business. He would reportedly sell the illegally obtained films to piracy website operators who offered the highest bids, often commanding around $800 per film. Additionally, he charged approximately $135 per film on platforms like Telegram. The cumulative earnings from this massive operation are estimated to be in the crores.
The case also implicated Sril Raj, allegedly the administrator of the notorious piracy site TamilBlasters, who is said to have accumulated a staggering ₹5 crore and earned about ₹9 lakh monthly in cryptocurrency.
In a bizarre twist, after Kumar’s arrest, the distribution companies’ own cybersecurity personnel were called in to interrogate him. He not only confessed but also reportedly “drew a picture” and fully explained the network structure and protocols of the hacked companies, leaving the security experts “frozen” in shock and forcing the firms to admit the security breach.
The Undercover Sting
The method of the hackers’ eventual capture is the “suspense” in this sprawling case. The Hyderabad Police, acting with intelligence and strategy, reportedly went undercover, negotiating deals with the suspects as if they were fellow piracy operators. By transferring money in cryptocurrency, they were able to trace and eventually close in on the network’s key figures.
The fallout from the arrest has sent shockwaves through the film community. Just four days after the bust, the police called a meeting with top actors like Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, and Nani to graphically explain how the movies were stolen. The industry stalwarts were reportedly “shocked” by the sophistication of the operation. This has immediately spurred discussions within the film circles about urgent enhancements to data storage and backup security protocols to prevent future catastrophic leaks. The investigation is ongoing, with police suspecting more individuals may be involved in the extensive piracy network.
