In a cinematic landscape often dominated by fleeting trends, Sudha Kongara’s latest directorial venture, Parasakthi, has proven that powerful storytelling resonates far beyond the box office. After a grand theatrical release on January 10, 2026, during the Pongal festivities, the film has now made a thunderous debut on the digital platform ZEE5. Within just 72 hours of its premiere on February 7, the film shattered previous records by clocking over 100 million streaming minutes, marking the fastest ascent to this milestone in the platform’s history.
The film, which serves as Sivakarthikeyan’s landmark 25th project (SK25), is a visceral dive into the socio-political climate of 1960s Tamil Nadu. Centered on the anti-Hindi imposition agitations, the narrative follows Chezhiyan (played by a restrained and intense Sivakarthikeyan), a railway worker turned revolutionary leader of the “Purananuru Squad.” Supporting him is Atharvaa as his impulsive younger brother, Chinnadurai, and Sreeleela, who makes a stellar Tamil debut as Ratnamala—a character who is much more than a love interest, serving as a political catalyst and the daughter of the state’s Chief Minister.
“I am hoping it takes off during the Pongal weekend, reaching more people,” director Sudha Kongara had previously stated amidst social media backlash. It seems her wish has been granted tenfold in the digital arena.
Despite grossing over ₹100 crore at the box office, the film was initially labeled a commercial “underperformer” due to its massive ₹150 crore budget and stiff competition during the Sankranthi season. However, the OTT release has invited a wave of “new appreciation.” Interestingly, ZEE5 has also released an “Uncut Version” in Tamil, restoring scenes that were previously censored for theatrical release, including intense political dialogues and raw depictions of student activism.
The technical brilliance of the film—bolstered by GV Prakash Kumar’s 100th musical score and Ravi K. Chandran’s evocative cinematography—has translated seamlessly to home screens. With dubbed versions in Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam performing exceptionally well, Parasakthi is no longer just a Tamil hit; it is a pan-South Indian phenomenon. As Sivakarthikeyan gears up for his next big announcement for his 41st birthday on February 17, Parasakthi remains firmly etched as one of his career-best performances.
