The Great Kollywood Shake-up: Producers Demand Accountability at “Room Boy” Audio Launch
In an industry often blinded by the glitz of superstardom, a sobering reality check was delivered at the music and trailer launch of the upcoming suspense thriller, Room Boy. Held in the presence of industry titans and the press, the event transcended a typical promotional fair, turning into a platform for veteran producers to voice their “deep-seated frustrations” regarding the current state of Tamil cinema.
High Salaries, Low Returns: Five Star Kathiresan’s Candid Critique
The most striking moment of the evening came from Five Star Kathiresan, Secretary of the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC). In a remarkably blunt address, he pointed out the unsustainable financial model currently gripping Kollywood. “Only 30 percent of the budget goes into actual production, while 70 percent is swallowed by hero salaries,” Kathiresan remarked, noting that when a film fails, the burden falls solely on the producer.
He drew a sharp comparison with the Telugu film industry (Tollywood), where actors reportedly stand by their producers during crises. He lamented that in Tamil Nadu, “Except for Superstar Rajinikanth, no one comes forward to help the producers.” His words served as a clarion call for actors to take more responsibility for the commercial health of the industry that sustains them.
A New Dawn for Small-Scale Cinema
Echoing the need for structural change, G.K.M. Tamil Kumaran, President of the TFPC, revealed that major discussions are underway to “sanitize” the industry. He expressed optimism that the next few years would witness a positive transformation.
“We have formulated guidelines to ensure small films get the necessary priority in theaters. Our goal is to create a path where young directors and new producers find more opportunities without being overshadowed by the giants,” Tamil Kumaran stated.
The Emotional Journey of Director Jegan Rajan
Amidst the systemic debates, the heart of the event remained the film itself—a suspense thriller directed by Jegan Rajan, a former film institute student. For Rajan, this day was the culmination of a quarter-century-long odyssey.
“I have lived with this dream for nearly 25 years,” an emotional Rajan shared. He dedicated the launch to his late father, N.V. Sundaram, who always believed his son would one day wield the megaphone. Rajan’s story is one of grit; after years of struggle, he was even prepared to mortgage his land to fund the film before producer Suriyakala Chandramoorthy stepped in, offering him full creative freedom.
About the Film: “Room Boy”
Produced by ACM Cinemas, Room Boy stars debutant C. Nikhil alongside an ensemble cast including Harsha, Imman Annachi, and Mumbai model Nidhi Maroli. The plot follows a hotel room boy in Yelagiri who finds himself entangled in a web of mystery following the death of a manager and the disappearance of a reform school superintendent.
Veteran producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu lauded the team’s effort, noting that the trailer promises a “complete package” of songs, action, and sentiment. He emphasized that despite the high costs involved in modern filmmaking, the quality of Room Boy suggests a strong potential for box-office success when it hits screens this April.
