The Cinematic and Political Storm
The landscape of Tamil Nadu politics and cinema is currently witnessing a seismic shift as Thalapathy Vijay prepares for his full-scale political debut with his party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). However, director Praveen Gandhi, known for his outspoken nature, has launched a scathing verbal offensive against the actor, questioning both his political acumen and his legacy as a performer.
The Political Alienation Argument
In a recent interview that has gone viral across social media platforms, Praveen Gandhi posed a blunt question to the actor-turned-politician: “If you pick a fight with everyone, who is left to vote for you?” Gandhi argued that Vijay’s camp has unnecessarily antagonized the supporters of the DMK, ADMK, and Seeman, as well as the fanbases of other superstars like Ajith Kumar (Thala fans).
Most recently, the director notes that Vijay’s supporters have allegedly drawn the ire of Rajinikanth’s massive following. Gandhi warned, “Your leader Vijay himself considers Rajinikanth his role model. If Rajini gives even a small signal tomorrow, the people will stand against you. You will lose in every place you stand.”
Questioning the ‘Next MGR’ Tag
Praveen Gandhi did not stop at politics; he delved deep into Vijay’s cinematic identity. He observed that while fans started calling Vijay the “Next MGR” following the success of films like Mersal, the actor lacks a truly unique signature.
“Vijay is not someone who dropped from the sky… he is someone who learned by watching Rajinikanth,” Gandhi stated. He went on to critique Vijay’s style, body language, and even his dancing, claiming they don’t meet a “unique standard” and are heavily reminiscent of the Superstar. He pointedly asked, “What is Vijay’s unique identity? Has he won major awards as a great actor?”
The ‘What If’ of Silambarasan TR
Perhaps the most polarizing part of Gandhi’s critique was his comparison involving Silambarasan TR (Simbu). The director claimed that during Vijay’s peak years, he lacked serious competition. He boldly asserted that if Silambarasan TR had remained consistent and focused without his career hiatuses, he would have “surpassed Vijay” long ago. This statement has reignited the decades-old fan wars between the different camps of Kollywood.
The Road Ahead for TVK
As the 2026 elections approach, these criticisms highlight the uphill battle Vijay faces. While his stardom is undeniable, critics like Praveen Gandhi argue that “the people around Vijay are the ones causing him harm” by creating friction with established political and cinematic icons. Whether Vijay can transcend these criticisms and build a consolidated vote bank remains the biggest question in Tamil Nadu.
