The “Wedding Altar” Heartbreak
In the glitzy but often ruthless world of Kollywood, success is measured by the stars you align with. For Director Vignesh Shivan, the opportunity to helm #AK62, starring the “Ultimate Star” Ajith Kumar, was supposed to be the pinnacle of his career. However, the project famously slipped through his fingers, with the mantle eventually passing to director Magizh Thirumeni for what is now Vidaamuyarchi.
During a recent promotional event for his upcoming film Love Insurance Kompany (LIK), Shivan did not hold back his emotions. He described the sudden exit from the high-profile project in deeply personal terms.
“I got a chance to direct a big film (#AK62), but it didn’t happen. It felt like a bride leaving at the wedding stage,” Shivan remarked, his voice tinged with the weight of that period.
He further elaborated that the professional setback led to a crisis of confidence within the industry. He noted that after the news broke, he was only offered “small films,” as the prevailing sentiment among producers was that he was perhaps “not capable” of handling big-budget spectacles.
The Financial Crisis and Nayanthara’s Intervention
The journey to his current project, LIK, was not a smooth transition. Shivan revealed that the production faced significant hurdles, at one point coming to a complete standstill. In a moment of vulnerability, the director credited his wife, Lady Superstar Nayanthara, for being his financial and emotional backbone.
He disclosed that when the shooting stopped due to a lack of funds, Nayanthara stepped in, providing the advance she had received from her film Mookuthi Amman to keep the cameras rolling on LIK. This revelation highlights the personal stakes involved in the filmmaking process and the strength of the power couple’s partnership in the face of industry skepticism.
The Fan Backlash: A Question of Professionalism
While Shivan’s narrative is one of resilience, it has been met with a polarized response from the audience, particularly the “Thala” Ajith fan base. Social media has been abuzz with critiques regarding his work ethic during the pre-production of #AK62.
A prominent fan account, Worldwide Thala Fans, voiced the frustration of many, stating:
“You wasted everyone’s time by not finishing the script. Ironically you had time to attend YouTube roundtable discussions and interviews rather than focusing on the pre-productions.”
The critique suggests that the “fucking up” of the Lyca and AK project—as the fans bluntly put it—was not a matter of capability, but of distraction and lack of preparation. This counter-narrative posits that the industry’s loss of trust was a direct consequence of Shivan’s perceived preference for media visibility over script development.
The Road Ahead with LIK
Despite the scars of the past, Vignesh Shivan expressed deep gratitude to his current team. He thanked producer Lalith Kumar for standing by him when others retreated and lauded actor-director Pradeep Ranganathan for his trust. He also reserved special praise for musical maestro Anirudh Ravichander, calling him “everything to this movie.”
As Love Insurance Kompany nears completion, it stands as more than just a film for Shivan; it is a statement of survival in an industry that is as quick to dismiss as it is to celebrate.
