Premalatha Vijayakanth, wife of legendary actor and politician Vijayakanth, recently made an emotional statement about the continued homage paid to her husband in Tamil cinema. She clarified that they have no issues with the use of Vijayakanth’s songs or posters in movies, saying, “Captain is not our property; he belongs to the people.” Her words reflect a deep respect for the public’s admiration and affection for the beloved actor.
The statement comes at a time when Vijayakanth has been prominently featured in recent films, including Thalapathy Vijay’s “G.O.A.T” and the newly released “Lubber Panthu,” starring Attakathi Dinesh and Harish Kalyan. Director Thamizharasan Pachamuthu, the creative mind behind Lubber Panthu, expressed his personal connection to Vijayakanth, sharing a touching anecdote.
“Dinesh Anna only listened to my story for 15 minutes,” Thamizharasan said. “In the film, I aged him to 40 and made him Durga’s father. After watching for a minute, I realized that he admires Vijayakanth sir as much as I do. That’s why he agreed to my vision of celebrating Captain in this film. From the beginning, I wanted my debut to be a tribute to Vijayakanth, and in Lubber Panthu, I’ve celebrated him as much as I possibly could.”
One of the film’s standout moments is the inclusion of the classic song Pottu Vaitha Thangakudam, sung by Malaysia Vasudevan. The use of this song has not only evoked nostalgia but also brought Malaysia Vasudevan’s legacy to the forefront in a way that few other platforms have managed. Critics have praised the seamless integration of Vijayakanth’s larger-than-life persona into the script, calling it a “masterclass in homage” by Thamizharasan.
Premalatha Vijayakanth’s remarks reflect the family’s gratitude for the continued love and respect shown to Vijayakanth, with his influence transcending generations. The recent tributes in films have ensured that “Captain” remains a symbol of heroism and leadership, both on-screen and in the hearts of his fans.
