The wait is finally over. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has confirmed that the trailer of his highly anticipated action entertainer Coolie, starring the legendary Rajinikanth, will premiere on August 2. The film, slated for a grand theatrical release on August 14, is one of the most ambitious projects in Indian cinema this year—with a staggering budget of ₹350 crore and a multi-industry ensemble cast.
In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kanagaraj revealed that Coolie will begin as an emotional drama before shifting gears into a high-octane action narrative. “The emotional foundation is very strong. The action will follow, but first, the story must hit the heart,” he said, hinting at a layered, character-driven approach rarely seen in mainstream Tamil action films.
Adding fuel to the buzz, the director also confirmed the rumors surrounding his ₹50 crore paycheck, stating that the blockbuster success of Leo—which grossed over ₹600 crore worldwide—played a pivotal role in negotiating his remuneration. “People might question the amount, but it comes from the success of my previous work. I’ve earned this, and more importantly, I’ve sacrificed a lot to make this happen,” he said.
When asked about dedicating two full years (ages 36 and 37) to Coolie, Lokesh reflected candidly: “It’s not a complaint. I missed family events, yes, but I’m excited. If this becomes a success, the recognition and earnings will benefit not just me but everyone close to me.”
In a bold move, Kanagaraj confirmed that Coolie will have only one trailer—no teaser, no additional promo cuts. “One trailer is enough. We want to keep the mystery alive. No distractions. Just one solid impact,” he emphasized, staying true to his storytelling ethos that thrives on suspense and surprise.
Since its announcement, Coolie has been enveloped in intrigue. The reveal video showed Rajinikanth in a rugged, retro avatar, wielding iron chains, evoking nostalgia for his 80s smuggler roles—but with Lokesh’s signature gritty realism.
Speaking about his villainous role, Nagarjuna said, “This is unlike anything I’ve done before. Facing off against Rajinikanth sir has been a thrilling ride.”
Coolie releases on August 14, clashing directly with the Bollywood juggernaut War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. While both films promise spectacle, Coolie brings the emotional heft and the Rajini charisma to the frontlines.
The film is expected to not just entertain but redefine the action genre in Tamil cinema. Lokesh’s evolving cinematic universe, combined with Rajinikanth’s magnetic presence, is a pairing fans across the country—and beyond—are eager to witness.
Whether Coolie connects with the LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe) remains to be seen. But come August 2, when the trailer drops, every frame will be under scrutiny.
The countdown has officially begun. Rajinikanth is ready to roar. And Lokesh Kanagaraj is ready to rewrite the rules of the mass entertainer.
