In an era where high-octane action and multiversal sagas dominate the silver screen, director Rathna Kumar is steering the narrative back to the poignant, conversational roots of romance. The grand introductory event, titled “Welcome to the World of 29,” was held recently at a premier luxury hotel in Chennai, marking the official unveiling of the film 29. Produced by a powerhouse collaboration between Stone Bench Films (Karthikeyan Santhanam and Karthik Subbaraj) and G Squad (Lokesh Kanagaraj), the film is poised to be a refreshing addition to the legacy of Tamil romantic dramas.
From a Facebook Post to the Big Screen
The genesis of 29 is as modern as its storytelling. Director Rathna Kumar, known for his distinct directorial voice in films like Meyaadha Maan, Aadai, and Gulu Gulu, revealed that the story began as a late-night social media post. During a rainy night, he shared a snippet of a conversation between a boy and a girl under an umbrella on Facebook. The overwhelming response from netizens, who felt a deep personal connection to the nameless characters, prompted a friend to advise him: “This is a movie. Delete the post before someone else makes it.”
“This film is a journey of two characters, Sathya and Viji, finding their identity through each other,” said Rathna Kumar. “The title ’29’ reflects a pivotal age where one often feels caught between youth and full-fledged adulthood.”
The Creative Synergy of Heavyweights
The event was a star-studded affair, attended by industry stalwarts including directors Arun Matheswaran, PS Vinothraj, Karthik Yogi, and producer Rajasekar Pandian. However, the highlight was the rare stage-sharing of three influential filmmakers: Karthik Subbaraj, Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Rathna Kumar.
Lokesh Kanagaraj, making his debut as a co-producer with this project, expressed his “blind faith” in Rathna Kumar. “We started as peers roaming the streets of Chennai with short films. 29 is about giving back to the industry that made us,” Lokesh remarked. Similarly, Karthik Subbaraj highlighted how Rathna Kumar’s writing possesses a unique blend of humor and emotional depth, reminiscent of the cult-classic romantic styles of Selvaraghavan and Gautham Vasudev Menon.
The Performance Pillars: Vidhu and Preethi Asrani
The film stars Vidhu as Sathya and Preethi Asrani as Viji. Vidhu, who has previously showcased his range in Jigarthanda DoubleX and Retro, steps into the lead role with high expectations. Preethi Asrani described her character, Viji, as a “21-year-old with a clear purpose,” contrasting the aimless 29-year-old Sathya.
The chemistry between the leads was showcased through an exclusive single-shot glimpse—the second chapter of Sathya’s life—which left the audience captivated by its technical finesse and natural dialogue.
A Musical Soul by Sean Roldan
Music director Sean Roldan, known for his soul-stirring melodies, shared that the script revived his “dormant feelings of love.” He emphasized that in an age of “fast-paced dating,” 29 brings back the beauty of soulful conversations. The film’s four released tracks have already garnered significant acclaim, setting the stage for a grand theatrical release on May 8, 2026.
