Thalaivan Thalaivii (transl. Male leader, Female leader), the Tamil romantic action comedy directed by Pandiraj, has become one of the biggest hits of 2025, crossing the ₹100 crore worldwide gross mark within weeks of release. Produced by Sathya Jyothi Films in association with Vipin Agnihotri, the film stars Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen in the lead roles.
The production house officially announced the milestone on social media, thanking audiences for their support and calling the film a “unanimous blockbuster.” The movie was released in theatres on July 25, 2025, and despite mixed reviews from critics, it quickly turned into a commercial success, appealing largely to family audiences.
However, the narrative surrounding Thalaivan Thalaivii took a sharp turn following its OTT premiere on Prime Video on August 22, 2025. Social media platforms have been buzzing with polarised reactions, with many viewers branding the film as “too cringe,” “over the top,” and “toxic.” Several netizens criticised its regressive depiction of marital discord, where the lead couple is constantly shown bickering and clashing in ways that audiences found uncomfortable.
“Unbearable from start to end,” wrote one user on X, while another compared it to “Thalaivali Thalaivali” (meaning headache). Comments such as “I haven’t seen Vijay Sethupathi acting this badly” highlight how even star power hasn’t shielded the film from online backlash.
The story revolves around Aagasaveeran (Vijay Sethupathi), who runs a roadside eatery, and Perarasi (Nithya Menen), a well-educated woman he marries. Their relationship, marked by frequent quarrels, soon spirals into family-involved disputes. While Pandiraj’s intention was to capture the rugged reality of marital conflicts, critics argue that the narrative reinforces outdated stereotypes instead of offering fresh perspectives.
The film also features Yogi Babu, Roshini Haripriyan, Deepa Shankar, Chemban Vinod Jose, Saravanan, and Kaali Venkat in supporting roles. Santhosh Narayanan’s music, paired with M. Sukumar’s cinematography and Pradeep E. Ragav’s editing, elevated the theatrical experience and contributed to its strong box office run.
Interestingly, this is not the first Tamil film this year to face such a situation. Earlier, Maaman, starring Soori and Aishwarya Lekshmi, also enjoyed box office success despite critical backlash and later drew flak upon its OTT release.
Nevertheless, Thalaivan Thalaivii continues to draw audiences on streaming, and the mixed reactions may only fuel further discussions around the film. While many online debates dismiss it as “toxic,” some viewers still defend the performances, particularly Sethupathi’s, calling the film an engaging family drama despite its flaws.
For now, Thalaivan Thalaivii stands as another example of Tamil cinema’s box office might—proof that commercial success and audience perception do not always go hand in hand.
