Dream Warrior Pictures has officially unleashed the first lyrical video and single, “God Mode,” from the upcoming Tamil film Karuppu, starring Suriya, Trisha, and a prominent ensemble cast. The song, a “power-packed blend of sound, spirit, and style,” as described by the producers, immediately resonated with fans, evidenced by the production house quickly announcing its “ONE MILLION VIEWS” milestone on YouTube. The initial posters feature lead actor Suriya in a powerful, god-like stance, wielding a formidable aruval (sickle) and surrounded by an energetic crowd, perfectly embodying the song’s aggressive title and rural aesthetic.
However, the song’s commercial success has been accompanied by a significant wave of social media discussion, focusing primarily not on the composition but on the choice of singer. Composer Sai Abhyankkar, who has also sung the track along with Gana Muthu, finds himself at the centre of a vocal controversy. Several commentators have expressed the opinion that the composer’s voice “doesn’t suit any actor on screen” and that the song “God Mode” “should have been sung by someone like SPB or Shankar Mahadevan.” This suggestion of alternate, more seasoned vocalists like Shankar Mahadevan was reiterated across multiple posts.
The criticism stems from a perceived trend in the industry where music directors frequently sing their own compositions. One user lamented, paraphrasing an ongoing debate, that while veteran music directors like Anirudh (“Ani”) started by featuring diverse singers such as Mohit Chauhan and Vishal Dadlani before singing most of their own tracks, Sai Abhyankkar is adopting this practice “very early in his career.” Other reactions highlighted a growing fatigue with a lack of vocal variety, stating, “It’s very annoying to have the same voice in all songs. No variety,” and worriedly noting that the quality of the lyrics, penned by Vishnu Edavan, seems to have “taken a nosedive” amidst the current sonic landscape. Some, however, defended the music director, speculating that the choice of singer is often dictated by “market pressure” or the film’s directors, not merely the composer’s preference.
Karuppu, written and directed by RJB, features a substantial cast including Suriya, Trisha, Indrans, Natty, Mansoor Ali Khan, and others. The song’s robust musical arrangement, composed and programmed by Sai Abhyankkar, includes contributions from Kalyan (Additional Percussions), Yanka (Additional Rhythm), and the distinctive sound of Nasik Dhol by the Salem Kuzhu. Despite the vibrant production—which features choreography by Shobi and Sandy, and cinematography by G K Vishnu—the current buzz underscores a critical juncture in Tamil cinema music: the balance between a composer’s vision and the audience’s demand for vocal diversity and established quality.
The music video for “God Mode” continues to rack up views, proving its undeniable impact, even as the public discussion dictates that success alone does not shield creative choices from scrutiny. The controversy now sets a high-stakes backdrop for the rest of Sai Abhyankkar’s musical album for Karuppu.
